Case Study – Maidenhead: A Historic-looking Build Reimagined for Modern Living

Every project has its own unique challenges and stories, and this Maidenhead property stands out as one of our most rewarding transformations. Nestled in the Windsor Council area, this historic home had plenty of character—a small double-pitched roof, a catslide roof (which, surprisingly, was not the client’s favorite feature), and a series of stepped extensions. While charming, it didn’t align with the client’s vision of a larger, more uniform, and contemporary home.

What followed was a journey of bold design, persistence, and overcoming opposition.

A Historic Home Meets Bold Ambitions

The original property had its quirks, but the client wanted a complete overhaul. Their goal? A bigger, unified home that would stand out on this distinctive street—a road known for its grand, imposing houses. Achieving this vision wasn’t easy. There were multiple rounds of negotiation with Windsor Council, along with considerable pushback from neighbouring properties who opposed the extensive changes.

Despite the challenges, we persevered, and the result is nothing short of transformative. Apart from a small section of the front and right-hand side walls, this property has been rebuilt from the ground up. It’s practically a new build and an impressive one at that.

The Expansive Design

The house grew by over 100 sqm, becoming a truly spacious and modern property. At the rear, we designed a T-shaped extension that extends 5m out from the original rear wall, with an additional 3m projection to create the T-shape. The sheer scale of this extension is breathtaking—it spans an impressive 17m in width!

On the ground floor, a large double garage was added alongside a full-width double-storey side extension. A standout feature is the grand modern bay window, which rises from the ground floor all the way up into the newly raised roofline. At the rear, a large box dormer was introduced to complement the newly structured crown roof.

A Home Reimagined

The original small, three-bedroom property is now an expansive six-bedroom masterpiece, with each bedroom boasting an average size of 25 sqm. Each bedroom is thoughtfully designed with ensuite bathrooms, adding privacy and comfort.

The ground floor is a marvel of modern design, featuring a super wide and grand hallway that sets the tone for the rest of the home. A sweeping staircase connects all floors, adding a touch of elegance and drama. The living spaces include:

  • An extremely large open-plan kitchen and dining area, perfect for family gatherings.
  • A formal private dining room, ideal for entertaining guests.
  • A dedicated study for work or quiet reflection.
  • A spacious main reception area for relaxation and hosting.
  • A cloakroom the size of a standard bedroom!

This home was meticulously designed to balance functionality, luxury, and aesthetic appeal.

What’s Next?
With all designs approved, including structural engineering and building regulations, the project is set to break ground in summer 2025. This home promises to be a true showstopper—a property that blends history with modernity, perfectly tailored to the client’s vision.

At Salstan, we thrive on projects like this—where ambition meets challenge, and design meets transformation.
